Documenting the Outlaw Mansion: Abandoned Photography in Alabama
My ongoing photography series, Youth and Urban Decay, explores the intersection of human vitality and the slow reclamation of architecture by nature. When I arrived at the abandoned Outlaw Mansion near Mobile, Alabama, in November 2020, I found the perfect backdrop to document this tension. This project isn’t merely about documenting crumbling structures; it is about placing the next generation within the frame of history, highlighting the beauty found in transition just months before the site was lost.
A Journey Through Architectural History
The Outlaw Mansion, a masterpiece designed by George Bigelow Rogers, stood as a relic of 1914 opulence before its destruction in the 2021 fire. Exploring the site, one could still sense the ambition behind its hydroelectric innovations and rumored secret passages. The decay offered a stark, cinematic environment that challenged the limits of my lens, demanding a focus on composition that honored the home’s former stature.
The Intersection of Friendship and Ruin
For this session, I was joined by two 16 year old girls who made the drive from Pensacola. These long-time friends brought a sense of quiet curiosity to the shoot, their presence grounding the sprawling, empty halls. While their dynamic added a layer of human connection to the narrative, my objective remained anchored in the structural decay—using the house to frame a story about the inevitable passage of time. Through documentary photography, I aim to preserve these spaces, ensuring the spirit of the Outlaw Mansion persists even after its physical form has faded.
Youth, Style, and the Ruins
The visual impact of this series was elevated by the beautiful teen models themselves, whose effortless aesthetic provided a perfect counterpoint to the mansion’s decay. Dressed in casual skate attire—cropped tops, distressed denim, and layered flannels—they brought a contemporary, vibrant energy into the abandoned space. Their poses, ranging from relaxed moments on the worn-out sofa to dynamic, athletic stances with their skateboards, captured a sense of youthful confidence. It was their natural charisma, paired with a genuine comfort in front of the lens, that transformed these haunting remnants of the past into a compelling narrative of contrast and life.
