The Z5 II’s menus are accessed by pressing the MENU button and are organized into tabs down the left side of the screen: Photo Shooting, Video Recording, Custom Settings, Playback, Setup, Network, and My Menu / Recent Settings. There’s also a separate quick-access i menu, opened with the i button, which holds a customizable shortlist of your most-used settings. Everything to do with how a still photo is captured and processed: file formats, image quality, focus, exposure, and in-camera shooting tools.

Reset photo shooting menu

Restores every setting in this menu to its factory default in one step.

There’s no undo, so this is best used deliberately — after a shoot where you changed a lot of one-off settings, not mid-session.
Storage folder

Choose or create the folder on the memory card where new photos are saved.

Creating a fresh folder per shoot or client keeps files organized before they ever hit your computer, which pays off later when you’re sorting hundreds of images.
File naming

Set the three-letter prefix used in image file names (default is “DSC”).

Changing this to your initials makes files instantly identifiable once mixed with other photographers’ work on a shared drive.
Role played by card in Slot 2

With two memory cards inserted, this decides how the second card behaves relative to the first.

Your options

Overflow
Card 2 only starts recording once Card 1 fills up. Good for maximizing total capacity, bad if Card 1 fails — everything shot after was never backed up.
Backup
Every shot is written to both cards simultaneously. Doubles your safety net against a corrupted or failed card, at the cost of using storage twice as fast.
RAW Slot 1 – JPEG/HEIF Slot 2
RAW files go to one card, the compressed copy to the other. Useful if you want RAW for editing and a lighter, ready-to-hand-off set on the second card. Whether that second-card copy is JPEG or HEIF isn’t chosen here — it follows whatever Tone mode is set to elsewhere in this menu (SDR = JPEG, HLG = HEIF).
Image area

This is the setting that actually decides how much of the sensor gets used — full-frame or a crop. If your goal is to always use every pixel the sensor has, this is the one to check, not “Enable DX image sizes” further down (that one does something different — see the Image size settings entry below).

Your options

FX (36×24)
Uses the entire sensor — full frame, no crop. Maximum resolution, the widest field of view for any given lens, and the best low-light performance the sensor is capable of. This is what “taking full advantage of the sensor” means, and it’s the one to leave selected if that’s your priority.
DX (24×16)
Crops in to roughly the APS-C area (a 1.5× crop), which effectively extends the reach of telephoto lenses at the cost of resolution and a narrower field of view. Automatically forced on if you attach a DX-format lens, regardless of what’s selected here.
1:1 (24×24)
A square crop taken from the middle of the FX frame. A compositional/aesthetic choice, not a resolution one — you’re trading away pixels for a square aspect ratio in-camera rather than cropping to square later in editing.
16:9 (36×20)
A wide, cinematic crop taken from the FX frame. Like 1:1, this sacrifices some resolution for an aspect ratio, useful if you know you want that widescreen look straight out of camera.
To guarantee every photo uses the full sensor: set this to FX (36×24) and leave it there. That’s the whole answer — none of the other three options here use the complete sensor.
Tone mode

Switches the camera’s overall tonal processing between standard and high-dynamic-range output.

Your options

SDR
Standard dynamic range, saved as JPEG. Universally compatible with every screen, printer, and piece of software you’ll ever use.
HLG
Hybrid Log-Gamma, saved as HEIF, captures a noticeably wider range of tones and richer color. Only worth using if you know your viewing and editing devices actually support HEIF/HDR display.
Image quality

Sets the file format the camera records to card. Note that this menu doesn’t actually list “JPEG” or “HEIF” by name — it’s labeled generically as “JPEG/HEIF,” and whichever one you actually get is decided by the separate Tone mode setting (SDR gives you JPEG, HLG gives you HEIF). Image quality just controls the compression tier within whichever one that is.

Your options

JPEG/HEIF Fine★ and Fine
The highest-quality compressed tier, with the smallest amount of data thrown away. Fine★ uses even less compression than plain Fine (bigger file, marginally better quality) — this is the tier to use if you want a fully processed, ready-to-share image with minimal quality loss.
JPEG/HEIF Normal★ and Normal
A middle tier: noticeably smaller files than Fine, with a small, usually-invisible amount of extra quality loss. Reasonable for everyday shooting when you don’t need maximum quality and want more shots per card.
JPEG/HEIF Basic★ and Basic
The most compressed, smallest-file tier, with visible quality loss especially in fine detail. Mostly useful when card space is genuinely tight.
RAW
Unprocessed sensor data, recorded alone with no JPEG/HEIF copy at all. Largest files, but every editing decision — exposure, white balance, highlight recovery — stays fully adjustable afterward in software like Lightroom or Capture One. The standard choice for professional work.
RAW + JPEG/HEIF (any of the six tiers above)
Records a RAW file plus a compressed copy at whichever quality tier you pick, for every shot. Gives you a RAW to edit later and a finished, shareable image the same day, at the cost of roughly the RAW size plus the compressed size per photo. Same rule applies here: whether that compressed copy is JPEG or HEIF depends entirely on Tone mode, not on anything you choose in this menu.
HEIF support is still inconsistent across older software, phones, and printers, so unless HLG’s wider tonal range is specifically needed, leaving Tone mode set to SDR is the safer default — that guarantees every JPEG/HEIF file the camera produces, on either card, comes out as a plain JPEG that opens anywhere. HEIF only appears if Tone mode is deliberately switched to HLG; there’s no way to get JPEG on one card and HEIF on the other at the same time, since Tone mode applies globally.
Image size settings

Sets the pixel dimensions (Large/Medium/Small) for JPEG/HEIF files. This is easy to confuse with the FX/DX choice, but it’s a genuinely separate thing: this menu only controls resolution within whatever image area you’ve already chosen above — it does not switch you between full-frame and crop. RAW files always record at full size regardless of what’s picked here.

Your options

Image size: Large
Full resolution for whatever image area is active — for FX, that’s the sensor’s complete 6048×4032 pixels. The right default for anything you might print large or crop into later, and the only way to make full use of the resolution FX gives you.
Image size: Medium / Small
Roughly 75% or 50% of full resolution for JPEG/HEIF files. Smaller files and faster transfer, but less room to crop and print big — best reserved for web-only or quick-turnaround work. RAW is unaffected either way; it’s always recorded at Large.
Enable DX image sizes: Off (default)
DX-format shots (if you ever take any) just use the same Large/Medium/Small setting as everything else. If you always shoot FX, this toggle has no effect on you at all — leave it off and it’s a non-issue.
Enable DX image sizes: On
Lets you set a separate Large/Medium/Small size specifically for photos taken in the DX crop area, independent of the size used for FX, 1:1, or 16:9 shots. Only relevant if you regularly switch into DX mode (say, to borrow extra reach from a telephoto) and want a different resolution there than you use for FX. Turning this on does not switch you into DX — it only becomes relevant once you are in DX, which is chosen separately in Image area.
Image size (DX)
A second Large/Medium/Small selector that only appears, and only matters, when Enable DX image sizes is On. Sets the resolution used specifically for DX-area shots.
This toggle is not the full-frame switch — it just controls whether DX shots get their own separate resolution setting. If you’ve set Image area to FX and plan to keep it there, “Enable DX image sizes” will never come into play; it’s safe to ignore and leave at its default of Off.
RAW recording

Controls how RAW files are compressed. Unlike some older Nikon bodies (including the original Z5), the Z5 II doesn’t offer a bit-depth choice or an Uncompressed option here — every RAW file is fixed at 14-bit, and compression is limited to the three options below. That’s simply how this camera works, not something hidden behind a menu you haven’t found.

Your options

Lossless Compressed
Reduces file size with zero quality loss compared to uncompressed — mathematically identical image data, just packaged more efficiently. The safest default for most photographers.
High Efficiency★
Smaller files than Lossless Compressed, using compression that discards a small amount of data — but Nikon states this tier holds up close to Lossless Compressed in quality. A strong default if you want to save card space without a real-world quality trade-off.
High Efficiency
The smallest RAW files of the three, with more data discarded than High Efficiency★. Great for maximizing shots per card and buffer depth during long bursts; only a concern if you’re doing extremely aggressive shadow recovery or the largest prints.
ISO sensitivity settings

This opens a small sub-menu with four related settings that work together, rather than a single either/or choice. The last two only come into play once Auto ISO sensitivity control is switched on.

Your options

ISO sensitivity
The actual ISO number. With Auto ISO sensitivity control off, this is exactly the ISO used for every shot — nothing changes it but you. With Auto ISO on, this same number instead becomes the floor: the lowest ISO the camera will use before it starts climbing on its own.
Auto ISO sensitivity control
The master On/Off switch for the whole automatic system. Off: the ISO sensitivity value above is used exactly as set, every shot, until you manually change it. On: the camera can raise ISO above that value by itself, governed by the two settings below.
Maximum sensitivity
Only matters once Auto ISO sensitivity control is On. Sets a ceiling — the highest ISO the camera is allowed to climb to automatically, no matter how dark it gets. Lower protects against noise; higher prioritizes getting a usable shot over a clean one.
Minimum shutter speed
Also only matters with Auto ISO on. In P and A modes, sets the slowest shutter speed the camera will tolerate before it starts raising ISO instead of slowing the shutter further. Can be a specific speed, or “Auto,” which picks a sensible minimum based on the attached lens’s focal length (faster for telephotos, where shake shows up more) — nudgeable toward Faster or Slower if you want to bias that logic.
With Auto ISO sensitivity control set to Off, ISO sensitivity behaves as a plain manual number, and it can be changed live while shooting by holding the dedicated ISO button (top plate, near the shutter release) and turning a command dial. For anyone who’d rather not hold a button down, a direct ISO control can also be assigned to one of the Fn buttons via Custom Setting f2 (Custom controls), or added to the i menu for one-tap access.
White balance

Tells the camera what “neutral white” looks like under your current light source, which shifts overall color cast.

Your options

Auto
The camera estimates white balance per shot. Convenient and generally reliable, but can shift subtly between frames in mixed or changing light — a problem if you need consistent color across a series.
Presets (Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Flash)
Fixed values matched to common light sources. More consistent than Auto shot-to-shot, and a good starting point if you know what you’re shooting under.
Choose color temperature (K)
Dial in an exact Kelvin value. Gives precise, repeatable control, useful when matching color across multiple cameras or light setups.
Preset manual
Measure white balance directly off a gray or white card placed in the actual light the subject is under. The most accurate option when color fidelity really matters, like product or catalog work. To record one: open White balance → Preset manual in the photo shooting menu, highlight one of six storage slots (d-1 through d-6), and choose to measure a new value — a target icon appears on screen; point it at the gray/white card and press the shutter-release button (or the center of the multi-selector) to take the reading, which the camera then stores in that slot for reuse. There’s also a “Select image” option in the same menu that copies the white balance from an existing photo already on the card, instead of measuring fresh. For faster access in the field, White balance can be assigned to a Fn button under Custom Setting f2 (Custom controls), letting the preset be selected and measured without opening the full menu each time.
How much this matters depends entirely on the file format: if shooting RAW, white balance is stored as a tag rather than baked into the pixel data, so it’s fully and losslessly adjustable afterward in software — getting it slightly wrong in-camera costs nothing beyond a less accurate preview while shooting. If shooting JPEG/HEIF only, white balance is baked in at capture, and pushing it hard in editing afterward can introduce visible banding or color shifts. Preset manual is worth the extra step specifically for tricky mixed lighting, same-day JPEG delivery with no editing pass, or matching color across multiple cameras — for RAW work in normal conditions, Auto or a rough preset is genuinely fine to start from.
Set Picture Control

Chooses the overall color, contrast, and sharpening “look” baked into JPEG/HEIF files (RAW keeps the underlying data, so this is non-destructive if you shoot RAW).

Your options

Standard
Nikon’s balanced, moderate-contrast default — a safe general-purpose look for most subjects.
Neutral
Flatter, lower-contrast rendering that leaves the most room for grading in post. Preferred by editors who plan to do heavy retouching.
Vivid
Boosted saturation and contrast for punchy, ready-to-share color straight out of camera.
Monochrome
Strips color for black-and-white JPEGs. Handy for previewing tonal composition, though RAW still holds full color if you change your mind.
Portrait / Landscape / Flat
Scene-tuned variants — Portrait softens skin rendering, Landscape boosts greens/blues, Flat minimizes contrast even further than Neutral for maximum grading latitude.
Creative Picture Controls
A larger family of stylized looks (Dream, Morning, Pop, Dramatic, and others) built for JPEG/HEIF shooters who want a distinct finished aesthetic without editing software.
Manage Picture Control

Save, rename, edit, or delete your own custom Picture Control presets so they’re ready to select later.

If you land on a sharpening/contrast/saturation combination you like for a certain type of shoot, save it here rather than re-dialing it in every time.
Set Picture Control (HLG)

Chooses which Picture Control is applied specifically when Tone mode is set to HLG.

HLG’s wider tonal range interacts with contrast settings differently than SDR, so it’s kept as a separate choice from your regular Picture Control.
Color space

Sets the range of colors the camera can record into JPEG/HEIF files.

Your options

sRGB
The web and consumer-print standard. Colors display correctly on virtually every screen and print service without any conversion — the right choice unless you have a specific reason not to use it.
Adobe RGB
A wider gamut that captures colors sRGB can’t. Only an advantage inside a properly color-managed print workflow; on an unmanaged screen or web upload, images can actually look duller.
This setting only affects JPEG/HEIF files (as the description above notes) — for anyone shooting RAW, it barely matters, since RAW processing software ignores the camera’s color space tag and works in its own internal space regardless. The real color space decision happens later, at export from Lightroom/Capture One: sRGB for anything web-bound, and a wider space only for a print lab that’s specifically color-managed for it. Leaving the camera itself on sRGB is a safe, set-and-forget default either way.
Active D-Lighting

Automatically preserves highlight and shadow detail in high-contrast scenes by adjusting the tone curve as the photo is processed.

Your options

Off
No adjustment. Gives you the most predictable, literal exposure to grade from — the usual choice if you shoot RAW and prefer to handle contrast yourself.
Low / Normal / High / Extra High
Progressively stronger recovery of shadow and highlight detail. Great for backlit or harsh midday scenes; pushed too high, it can look flat or slightly hazy.
Auto
Lets the camera judge scene contrast and pick a strength itself. Convenient, less predictable frame to frame.
Long exposure NR

Runs a noise-reduction pass on exposures longer than about 1 second.

Your options

On
Cleaner shadows on long exposures, but the camera takes roughly a second exposure of equal length to map and subtract noise — effectively doubling your wait between shots.
Off
No delay between long exposures. Better for time-lapses or when you’re processing noise reduction yourself in software.
High ISO NR

Softens visible noise in JPEG/HEIF images shot at high ISO. Doesn’t touch RAW data itself.

Your options

Off
Noise stays untouched, preserving maximum fine detail — best if you’ll denoise in software, which generally does a better job than in-camera processing.
Low / Normal / High
Increasingly aggressive smoothing of noise directly into the JPEG/HEIF. Convenient for out-of-camera delivery, but can start to soften fine texture and detail at higher settings.
Vignette control

Compensates for the corner darkening some lenses produce, especially wide open.

Your options

Off
Natural lens vignetting is left alone — some photographers actually prefer this look, or correct it selectively in post.
Low / Normal / High
Progressively stronger digital brightening of the corners. High is closest to fully neutral; keep in mind corner brightening can very slightly increase visible noise there.
Diffraction compensation

Counteracts the softening that occurs at very small apertures (a physics effect called diffraction) by applying targeted sharpening.

Your options

On
Keeps small-aperture shots (f/11 and smaller) crisper. Worth leaving on if you regularly shoot landscapes stopped well down for depth of field.
Off
No automatic sharpening applied. Fine for anyone who rarely shoots past f/8–f/11, or who prefers to sharpen manually in post.
Auto distortion control

Automatically corrects barrel or pincushion distortion for compatible Z-mount lenses.

Your options

On
Straighter lines straight out of camera, particularly useful with wide-angle lenses where distortion is most visible. Slightly reduces the field of view since correction crops the edges a little.
Off
Uncorrected geometry. Only worth choosing if you correct distortion yourself in software or intentionally want the lens’s native character.
Skin softening

Smooths complexion specifically on a detected face in JPEG/HEIF images — Nikon’s own documentation describes it as activating “when the face of a human portrait subject is detected.” It isn’t a general “smooth any skin tone in the frame” effect.

Your options

Off
Skin texture stays untouched — the better choice if you plan to retouch selectively yourself.
Low / Normal / High
Increasing amounts of automatic smoothing, applied only to the detected face. Convenient for quick portrait turnarounds; High can start to look artificial on close-up detail shots.
Worth knowing for anyone shooting physique, fitness, or athlete portraits: because this effect is tied to face detection, it does not touch skin tones on the torso, arms, or legs — muscle definition and skin texture there are left completely alone. Softening only ever applies to the detected face itself, and doesn’t activate anywhere at all if no face is detected in the frame.
Portrait impression balance

Fine-tunes the hue and brightness of skin tones specifically, independent of white balance — but it isn’t a simple slider. It’s a system of three savable custom looks (Off, Mode 1, Mode 2, Mode 3), each tuned separately and switched between as needed.

Your options

Off
No adjustment applied — the default, and the only sensible choice if the other three modes haven’t been set up yet.
Mode 1 / Mode 2 / Mode 3
Three independent, savable presets. To set one up: highlight the mode and press right to open its editor, which shows a small grid — press left/right to shift hue along a Magenta↔Yellow axis, and up/down to adjust brightness, then press OK to save. Once tuned, selecting that mode at the main screen makes it active for shooting. Having three slots lets you save different corrections for different situations — say, one tuned to counter the slightly orange cast of tungsten light and another for the greenish cast common under fluorescent light or in shade near foliage — and switch between them in seconds rather than re-tuning each time.
This only affects JPEG/HEIF output — RAW data is completely untouched, so for a RAW-first workflow it’s largely a non-feature; anything it does here can be done more precisely and reversibly later in Lightroom or Capture One. It’s worth setting up specifically for same-day JPEG delivery with no editing pass, or to get a more accurate skin-tone preview on the EVF/monitor while shooting (assigning this to the i menu via Custom Setting f1 lets you preview the effect live on your subject before saving a mode). One caution from Nikon’s own documentation: the effect isn’t perfectly masked to skin — it can also shift other areas of the image that are similar in color to skin tones.
Photo flicker reduction

Reduces banding or uneven exposure caused by flickering artificial light (common under fluorescent and some LED sources).

Your options

On
The camera times shots to avoid flicker-affected exposure. Worth using indoors under gym, office, or stage lighting where banding is likely.
Off
No timing adjustment. Fine in daylight or with continuous, non-flickering light sources like strobes or steady LEDs.
High-frequency flicker reduction

Targets banding from higher-frequency LED lighting that standard flicker reduction can miss.

If you’re shooting under modern LED panels and still seeing banding with standard flicker reduction on, this is the setting to check next.
Metering

Chooses how the camera reads the scene to calculate exposure.

Your options

Matrix
Analyzes the whole frame, weighing brightness, color, and subject position. The reliable general-purpose default for most shooting, and — when paired with Custom Setting b4 “Matrix metering face detection” — it factors in wherever a detected face sits in the frame, off-center or not, without the narrowness of true Spot metering.
Center-weighted
Prioritizes the center of the frame, ignoring the edges more. Only really useful when the subject is actually centered — for off-center compositions, it’s biased toward empty space instead of the subject, which usually works against portrait work rather than for it.
Highlight-weighted
Protects bright highlights specifically from blowing out. A specialty tool rather than a general portrait default — excellent for stage lighting, spotlit or rim-lit subjects, or anywhere a bright background would otherwise underexpose the subject.
Spot
Reads only a small area (about 4mm) tied directly to the active AF point — not a fixed spot in the frame. Precise, but sensitive to exactly where it lands; half an inch onto a shadow versus a highlight can shift the reading noticeably.
For portrait work, and specifically for off-center compositions: the important thing to know is that Spot metering automatically reads from wherever the active AF point is placed — it isn’t fixed to the center of the frame. Place the focus point on the subject’s face (as most portrait shooters already do with Single-point AF or eye-detection), and the meter reads exposure from that same spot, off-center or not, with no extra step required. The one exception: if AF-area mode is set to Auto-area AF, Spot metering falls back to reading dead center instead, since there’s no single user-placed point to link to. If precise Spot metering feels too twitchy shot to shot, Matrix metering with face detection (Custom Setting b4) is a gentler alternative that still favors the face wherever it sits, informed by the rest of the scene rather than one tiny point.
Flash control

Sets the control mode for an attached or wireless Speedlight.

Your options

TTL
The camera automatically meters and adjusts flash output per shot. Fast and reliable for changing scenes and distances.
Manual
You set a fixed flash power yourself. More consistent frame-to-frame in a controlled setup, but requires re-adjusting if subject distance or ambient light changes.
If this option is greyed out, in order of likelihood: (1) no flash is currently attached and powered on — the Z5 II has no built-in flash, so there’s nothing to control; (2) if a flash is attached, this specific menu only works with genuine Nikon Speedlights (SB-5000, SB-700, SB-500, SB-400, SB-300) — third-party flashes like Godox or Yongnuo get configured on the flash unit itself instead, not here; (3) Silent mode or a fully Electronic shutter type (Custom Setting d6) disables flash entirely, since electronic shutter doesn’t reliably sync with flash.
Flash mode

Chooses how flash timing relates to the shutter.

Your options

Front-curtain sync
Flash fires the instant the shutter opens. The standard default for most flash photography.
Rear-curtain sync
Flash fires right before the shutter closes, so motion trails from ambient light appear to trail behind a moving subject rather than in front of it. Useful for creative motion shots.
Slow sync
Uses a slower shutter speed alongside flash to pull in more ambient background light — good for keeping a lit background instead of a black one at night.
Red-eye reduction
Fires a brief pre-flash to shrink pupils before the main flash. Reduces red-eye at the cost of a slight delay and a “heads up” to your subject.
Flash compensation

Adjusts flash output brighter or darker relative to the camera’s automatic flash exposure, independent of overall exposure compensation. This only works with TTL (and other automatic flash modes) — in Manual flash mode there’s no automatic calculation to adjust, so brightness is instead controlled by setting the power level directly in Flash control.

Dial it down (negative) for a subtler fill-light effect that doesn’t overpower ambient light; dial it up (positive) when flash needs to dominate, like freezing a subject against a bright daylight background.
Release mode

Chooses how the shutter responds when you press the release button.

Your options

Single frame
One shot per press. The default for deliberate, composed shooting.
Continuous Low (CL)
A modest burst rate, adjustable via Custom Setting d1. Good middle ground for moderate action without flooding your card.
Continuous High (CH) / CH Extended
The fastest burst rates available, built for fast-moving subjects like sports or wildlife. Fills your card and your editing queue fastest, too.
Self-timer
Delays the shutter by a set number of seconds — for getting into your own shot, or for reducing camera shake on a tripod without a remote.
Focus mode

Chooses how the lens acquires and holds focus.

Your options

AF-S (Single-servo)
Focus locks once achieved and stays locked until you refocus. Best for stationary subjects — portraits, landscapes, product shots. This is the only Focus mode that allows Pinpoint AF in the AF-area mode list (greyed out under both AF-C and AF-A) — but the trade-off runs the other way too: Dynamic-area AF and 3D-tracking aren’t offered at all under AF-S, since both need continuous-tracking behavior that AF-S doesn’t provide.
AF-C (Continuous-servo)
Focus keeps tracking as long as the shutter is half-pressed, adjusting for a moving subject. Best for anything that moves unpredictably — kids, pets, sports.
AF-A (Auto-servo)
The camera automatically switches between AF-S and AF-C behavior based on whether the subject starts moving. The Z5 II was the first full-frame Nikon mirrorless body to get this mode. Convenient as a hands-off default, and it behaves like AF-C for AF-area mode purposes: it enables Dynamic-area AF and 3D-tracking (both of which need continuous-tracking behavior available) while disabling Pinpoint AF (which needs the opposite) — the same pattern as AF-C, just with the camera deciding on the fly rather than being locked into one behavior.
Manual focus
You control focus entirely by hand via the lens ring. Necessary for macro work, focus stacking, or any situation autofocus struggles with (heavy fog, glass, low contrast).
AF-area mode

Chooses how the camera selects where in the frame to focus. There are more options here than it first appears — several only show up depending on your Focus mode (AF-S vs. AF-C).

Your options

Pinpoint AF
The smallest, most precise point available — but only works with Focus mode set specifically to AF-S. It greys out under both AF-C and AF-A (auto-servo), since it can’t track anything moving and Nikon disables it whenever continuous-tracking behavior is possible. Best for a genuinely still subject where exact placement matters, like a locked-down studio pose or macro work.
Single-point AF
One user-movable point, standard size, works in both AF-S and AF-C. Locks onto whatever’s under the point and ignores everything else. The reliable, predictable default for deliberate composition of a subject that isn’t moving unpredictably.
Dynamic-area AF (S/M/L)
A single point you place yourself, backed by a ring of surrounding points (Small/Medium/Large) that catch focus if the subject briefly slips off the main point. Requires Focus mode set to AF-C or AF-A — it isn’t offered at all under AF-S, since it needs a continuously-updating point that AF-S’s lock-once behavior has no use for. A good middle ground when a subject moves somewhat unpredictably but you still want to actively choose where to place the point, rather than hand it entirely to the camera.
Wide-area AF (S/L)
Simply a larger single search zone than Single-point — S is a modest rectangle, L covers roughly 10% of the frame. No backup-point ring like Dynamic-area, just one bigger area. Good when a subject moves a bit within a general area and precise hand-tracking feels like overkill.
Wide-area AF (C1/C2)
The same idea as Wide-area (L), but with a custom zone size and shape you set yourself from dozens of options. Useful for tailoring the search area to a specific subject’s size once — say, isolating one person in a group — and reusing that saved zone.
Auto-area AF
The camera scans the whole frame and picks a subject itself using its subject-detection AI. Fast and hands-off, but you give up control over exactly what’s prioritized if more than one subject is in frame.
3D-tracking
Place the point on a subject once, engage AF, and the box follows that specific subject anywhere in the frame as it moves, tracking by color and contrast rather than needing you to keep re-aiming. Requires Focus mode set to AF-C or AF-A — not available under AF-S. Can drift onto the wrong subject if colors or tones are too similar to the background.
For portrait work — especially athletic or physique portraits, where a held pose still involves small shifts from breathing, flexing, or weight changes — 3D-tracking is a strong default: place the point on the eye once, and it holds through those small movements between frames without needing to be re-placed each shot. For a genuinely locked-down pose (tripod, fully controlled studio setup), switch Focus mode to AF-S and use Pinpoint AF for the most exact placement possible. Save Dynamic-area and Wide-area for subjects that are actually moving across the frame in a more athletic, active sense — not just posing.
AF/MF subject detection options

Tells the camera what kind of subject to prioritize when tracking focus.

Your options

People
Prioritizes detecting and tracking human faces and eyes. The right choice for portraits, events, and street photography.
Animals (dogs/cats, birds)
Tunes detection toward animal eyes and faces. Dramatically improves hit rate for pet and wildlife photography over generic tracking.
Vehicles
Tunes detection toward cars, motorcycles, trains, and planes — useful for motorsport or aviation photography.
Auto
Lets the camera decide what kind of subject is in frame. Convenient for mixed subject matter, less targeted than picking one category.
Off
Disables subject detection entirely, falling back to plain area-based focus. Occasionally useful when detection is locking onto the wrong thing in a busy scene.
MF subject detection area

Purely a manual-focus aid — this has no effect at all while shooting AF-S, AF-C, or AF-A, and is safe to ignore entirely if autofocus is always in use. It only comes into play when actually turning the focus ring by hand (Manual focus mode, or a manual-only lens like an adapted Voigtländer or AI-S lens), where it puts a detection box on screen over a face/eye/animal that turns green when sharply focused — a modern stand-in for the focus-confirm screens film SLRs used to have.

Detection limited to a large zone. Can help the camera latch onto the right subject faster in a cluttered frame.

Turns in-body image stabilization on/off and sets its response character.

Off
No stabilization. Necessary on a tripod for some older non-VR-aware panning techniques, and saves a small amount of battery.
Normal
Smooth, steady stabilization tuned for handheld stills. The right default for nearly all everyday shooting.
Sport
A more responsive, less “floaty” stabilization character tuned to keep a fast-moving subject visible through the viewfinder during panning shots.
Link VR to focus point

Ties image stabilization to the currently active focus point rather than the center of the frame.

Worth turning on if you frequently focus and compose off-center — it keeps stabilization optimized for where you’re actually looking, not just frame center.
Auto bracketing

Automatically varies a chosen setting across a burst of frames — but whether one shutter press captures the whole set depends entirely on Release mode.

AE bracketing
Varies exposure across frames — the classic choice for HDR blending or simply hedging against a tricky exposure call.
Flash bracketing
Varies flash output across frames, useful for dialing in fill-flash strength without trial and error.
White balance bracketing
Records one exposure but processes multiple color-temperature variants — handy insurance under uncertain mixed lighting.
ADL bracketing
Varies Active D-Lighting strength across frames, useful for comparing shadow/highlight recovery levels side by side.
In Single frame release mode, one shutter press captures one exposure in the sequence — a 3-shot bracket needs three separate presses, it doesn’t auto-advance. In Continuous (CL/CH), holding the shutter down fires through the whole bracket automatically and stops on its own once it’s complete, even if the button stays held. With Self-timer, a single press starts the countdown and then runs the entire sequence untouched — the cleanest option for tripod HDR work, since nothing needs to be touched between frames.
Related but distinct from two other tools further down this menu: HDR overlay is the automated, in-camera version of AE bracketing plus blending, done in one step; Multiple exposure is a separate creative tool for combining different content rather than extending dynamic range. The camera won’t run Auto bracketing and Multiple exposure at the same time — one has to be switched off before the other becomes available.

Multiple exposure

Combines two or more exposures into a single in-camera image.

Your options

Add
Simply overlays exposures. Bright areas get brighter with each added frame — works well for light trails or double-exposure portrait effects.
Average
Blends exposures at reduced strength each, keeping overall brightness balanced. Better for combining similar-exposure frames without blowing out highlights.
Lighten / Darken
Keeps only the lightest or darkest pixel value from each frame at every point. Lighten is popular for star trails; Darken can remove moving people from a busy scene.
This is a creative tool, not a dynamic-range tool — it’s for combining different content into one frame, not for extending highlight/shadow detail the way Auto bracketing or HDR overlay do. The camera also won’t let it run alongside Auto bracketing; one has to be switched off before the other becomes available.
HDR overlay

Shoots two frames at different exposures and blends them into one HDR image in-camera — essentially an automated version of what Auto bracketing plus manual software blending achieves, done in a single step.

Good for a fast, finished result straight from the camera in high-contrast scenes; for maximum control, most photographers still prefer AE bracketing and blending manually in software instead — HDR overlay only outputs a JPEG/TIFF (not RAW), and the two source exposures are discarded once the merge is done, so there’s no way to redo the blend differently afterward.
Interval timer shooting

Automatically fires the shutter at set intervals over a set duration, saving each shot as its own individual file — this is the tool self-timer-style self-portrait work generally runs on, distinct from Time-lapse video below, which bakes the shots directly into a finished movie file instead.

Your options

Start
Begins the sequence — either 3 seconds after you confirm (if “Now” is selected below), or at whatever scheduled date/time you’ve set. That 3-second delay is enough to step away from the menu, but usually not enough to get fully into position for a self-portrait; the scheduled start option gives more breathing room.
Choose start day/time
Now (starts almost immediately) or a specific scheduled date and time. Scheduling ahead is genuinely useful for self-portrait work — set it to start in 2–3 minutes and that’s real time to get in front of the camera and settled before the first frame fires.
Interval
The time between the start of one shot and the start of the next, in hours/minutes/seconds. Needs to be long enough to actually complete each exposure and, if flash is involved, long enough for it to fully recycle — too short, and the camera can silently skip an interval rather than take a bad shot (see Interval priority below).
Intervals × shots/interval
How many separate intervals to run, and how many shots to take within each one. For most self-portrait sessions, shots/interval stays at 1 — bump it up only if a quick burst at each interval (to catch a blink-free frame, for instance) is worth the extra files to sort through afterward.
Exposure smoothing
When On, the camera nudges each new shot’s exposure to match the one before it, softening any abrupt brightness shifts between frames. Most useful when ambient light is drifting slightly over a session; largely irrelevant if lighting is fully controlled (consistent flash/strobe output every time).
Electronic shutter options
Turns on the electronic (silent) shutter specifically for the interval sequence, with a separate volume control for its confirmation sound. Worth reading the caveat below before turning this on if flash is involved at all.
Interval priority
On: the camera guarantees a shot at every interval, capped at one shot per interval, even if that means a slightly rushed exposure. Off: the camera prioritizes a correctly exposed shot over hitting the interval exactly, which can mean an interval gets skipped entirely if it doesn’t have time to finish properly. For self-portrait work where you’re posing against a predictable rhythm, On is usually the better choice — a slightly-off exposure you can fix in editing beats a silently missing frame you didn’t know happened.
Focus before each shot
On: the camera refocuses before every single shot, using whatever Focus mode is currently active. Off: focus is set once and left alone. Worth turning Off if working from a marked, pre-focused spot each time (common in self-portrait setups) to avoid AF hunting or focus drift eating into your interval; worth turning On if actually repositioning between shots.
Options: AE bracketing or Time-lapse video
Optionally layer AE bracketing on top of the interval sequence (each interval becomes a small bracket rather than one frame), or have the camera additionally assemble a time-lapse video from the same shots as a quick preview — the individual stills are still saved either way.
Starting folder options
Choose whether each new interval sequence gets its own fresh folder, and whether file numbering resets to 0001 for it — useful for keeping separate self-portrait sessions cleanly separated on the card without manual sorting later.
If an off-camera radio trigger misfires or drops out during interval shooting, check in this order: Electronic shutter options (or Silent mode) first — Nikon documents electronic shutter as interfering with hot-shoe contact activity that triggers rely on, and this is the most common cause. Next, Flash control mode — set it to manual/non-TTL if the trigger itself isn’t a genuine TTL device. Then trigger sleep timing — some units power down between long gaps and don’t wake fast enough for the next interval, so a shorter interval is worth testing. Finally, check hot-shoe contacts on both the camera and the trigger foot for dirt or wear. A short test sequence with the real setup is worth running before trusting it to a long unattended session.
A fully charged battery (or AC power) and a card with plenty of free space matter more here than for almost any other feature — long sessions over many hours will drain both faster than expected, and a card or battery that runs out mid-sequence ends the session without warning.
Time-lapse video

Shoots an interval sequence and assembles it directly into a finished time-lapse video file, no editing required.

Faster to get a shareable result than Interval Timer Shooting, but you lose the individual RAW frames — choose Interval Timer instead if you might want to grade or reframe later.
Focus shift shooting

Automatically steps focus across a series of shots, the raw material for focus-stacking in post.

Best on a tripod with a static subject — macro, product, or landscape work where you need front-to-back sharpness beyond what one aperture can give you.
Pixel shift shooting

Captures a series of sensor-shifted exposures that Nikon’s software can merge into one ultra-high-resolution, color-accurate composite. Built for tripod-mounted, completely static subjects — not for portrait work.

Your options

Fewer shots (4)
Faster capture, smaller resulting file, still a meaningful resolution and color-accuracy gain over a single frame.
More shots (8/16/32)
Diminishing but real gains in resolution and reduced color artifacts, at the cost of a much longer capture window — the subject and camera both need to stay perfectly still throughout.
This isn’t a portrait tool. It works at the sub-pixel level, so even a person consciously holding still — breathing, blinking, pulse alone — is usually enough to wreck the alignment across the multi-second capture window. It’s built for genuinely motionless subjects on a tripod: landscapes, architecture, product shots, art reproduction. Nikon’s own documentation is explicit that results suffer if the subject moves at all during the sequence. A standard single RAW exposure is the right tool for an actual portrait session.

A parallel set of settings that governs video specifically — many mirror the stills menu, plus dedicated audio and recording controls.

Reset video recording menu

Restores every setting in this menu to its factory default.

Same caution as the stills version — no undo, so use it deliberately.
Storage folder

Choose or create the folder video files are saved into.

File naming

Set the prefix used in video file names.

Destination

Chooses which card slot (or both) video is recorded to.

Recording to both cards at once is cheap insurance for anything you can’t reshoot — client work, events, interviews.
Video file type

Chooses the video wrapper/codec used for recording.

Your options

MOV (H.264/H.265)
High-quality, editing-friendly footage with manageable file sizes. The standard choice for most video work.
MP4
A more universally compatible, lighter-weight container — useful if footage needs to play on the widest range of devices with the least fuss.
Frame size/frame rate

Chooses resolution and frame rate for recording.

Your options

4K UHD
Sharp, detail-rich footage with room to crop or stabilize in post. Larger files and heavier to edit than 1080p.
Full HD (1080p)
Smaller, faster-to-edit files. Plenty for social/web delivery where 4K’s extra resolution won’t be visible anyway.
24p / 30p
Standard frame rates for natural-looking motion — 24p reads as more “cinematic,” 30p is the broadcast-video norm.
60p / 120p
Higher frame rates for smoother motion or dramatic slow-motion when played back at 24/30p in editing.
Image area

Chooses the sensor crop used for video, following the same FX/DX logic as stills.

ISO sensitivity settings

Sets video ISO manually or configures Auto ISO’s maximum sensitivity for video.

Video is less forgiving of visible noise than stills since it’s constantly moving on screen — consider capping Auto ISO’s max a bit lower than you would for stills.
White balance

Same white balance controls as stills, applied to video.

Locking to a fixed Kelvin value (rather than Auto) avoids visible color shifts mid-clip as your framing changes.
Set Picture Control

Chooses the color/tone rendering style used for video.

A flatter profile (Neutral or Flat) preserves the most latitude for color grading later, at the cost of footage looking a bit lifeless straight out of camera.
Manage Picture Control

Save, edit, or delete custom Picture Controls for video use.

HLG quality

Chooses the bit rate/quality tier used when recording HLG high-dynamic-range video.

Higher bit rate means better quality and more grading latitude, at the cost of noticeably larger files and heavier editing performance demands.
Active D-Lighting

Preserves highlight/shadow detail in high-contrast video, same concept as the stills version.

High ISO NR

Reduces visible noise in video shot at high ISO.

Vignette control

Compensates for lens corner-darkening in video, same options as stills.

Diffraction compensation

Counteracts softening from small apertures during video.

Auto distortion control

Automatically corrects lens distortion in video.

Skin softening

Smooths complexion on a detected face in video, the same face-detection-triggered effect as the stills version — it doesn’t apply to skin tones elsewhere in frame, like a torso or limbs.

Portrait impression balance

The same Off/Mode 1/Mode 2/Mode 3 hue-and-brightness system as the stills version, applied to video — see the Photo Shooting Menu entry above for how to set up each mode.

Video flicker reduction

Reduces banding caused by flickering light sources during video recording.

This one matters more in video than stills, since banding that’s invisible in a single frame becomes an obvious rolling flicker across many frames.
High-frequency flicker reduction

Targets banding from higher-frequency LED sources in video.

Metering

Chooses how exposure is measured for video, same modes and same focus-point-linked Spot metering behavior as stills — see the Photo Shooting Menu entry above for the full breakdown.

Focus mode

Chooses AF-S, AF-C, or manual focus for video.

Manual focus is often preferred for deliberate, cinematic focus pulls where you don’t want the camera making its own decisions mid-shot.
AF-area mode

Chooses how the focus area is selected during video recording — the same set of modes as stills, except 3D-tracking is called Subject-tracking AF here. See the Photo Shooting Menu entry above for the full breakdown.

AF/MF subject detection options

Chooses which subject types the camera prioritizes for tracking during video.

Product review mode

Shifts focus priority to an object held up to the lens rather than staying locked on your face.

Built for talking-to-camera product demos and unboxings — turn it on specifically for that use, since it will otherwise fight against normal face-priority tracking.
MF subject detection area

Video self-timer

Delays the start of video recording by a set number of seconds.

Vibration reduction

Turns in-body stabilization on/off for video and sets its response, same options as stills.

Electronic VR

Adds digital stabilization on top of in-body stabilization for smoother handheld video.

Noticeably smoother handheld footage, especially while walking. Crops the frame further to allow room for the stabilization to shift the image around.
Off
Full field of view retained. Better on a gimbal, tripod, or when you’ll stabilize in post instead.
Microphone sensitivity

Sets recording level for the built-in or external microphone.

Auto
The camera adjusts gain on the fly. Convenient for unpredictable audio environments, but can audibly “pump” volume up during quiet moments.
Manual
You set a fixed gain level. More consistent and professional-sounding, but requires monitoring to avoid clipping if volume spikes unexpectedly.
Attenuator

Reduces microphone input level to prevent distortion when recording very loud sound sources.

Turn this on for concerts, engines, or anywhere audio might otherwise clip even at the lowest manual gain setting.
Frequency response

Chooses which range of audio frequencies the microphone emphasizes.

Your options

Wide range
Captures the full audio spectrum, including low rumble and high detail — better for music or ambient/environmental sound.
Vocal range
Emphasizes frequencies where speech lives and reduces others. Improves clarity for interviews and talking-head video, especially in noisy environments.
Wind noise reduction

Applies a low-cut filter to the built-in mic to reduce wind rumble.

Effective for light wind, but a physical foam windscreen on an external mic will always outperform any digital filter in genuinely windy conditions.
Mic jack plug-in power

Supplies power through the mic jack for external microphones that require plug-in power.

Check your specific microphone’s power requirements before enabling — some self-powered mics don’t need this and a few can be damaged by unexpected voltage.
Headphone volume

Sets output level for monitoring audio through headphones connected to the camera.

Timecode

Configures timecode recording, used to sync footage across multiple cameras in editing.

Only worth setting up if you’re shooting multi-camera — for a single camera it adds little beyond what your NLE can already do with waveform sync.
External rec. cntrl (HDMI)

Lets the camera start/stop an external HDMI recorder in sync with its own record button.

Hi-Res Zoom

Digitally zooms into the video frame by cropping in while minimizing quality loss.

A useful middle ground when you can’t physically move closer and don’t want the harsh quality drop of a plain digital crop — but optical zoom or a longer lens will still always look better.

The deepest menu on the camera — this is where you reshape how the Z5 II physically behaves: autofocus logic, button assignments, dial direction, display behavior, and more. Organized into lettered groups (a through g).

a: Autofocus

a1: AF-C priority selection a1

In continuous AF, decides whether the shutter can fire before focus is confirmed.

Your options

Release
The shutter fires the instant you press it, focused or not. Prioritizes never missing the moment — the usual pick for fast action where a few soft frames beat a missed shot.
Focus / Release
The camera briefly favors confirmed focus before allowing the shutter to fire. Fewer out-of-focus frames, at the very slight risk of a delayed shutter on the first shot of a burst.

In single AF, decides whether the shutter is locked until focus is confirmed.

Your options

Focus
The shutter won’t fire until focus locks. Prevents accidental out-of-focus shots — the sensible default for deliberate, composed shooting.
Release
The shutter fires regardless of focus confirmation. Rarely useful in AF-S; mainly for specific fast-reaction scenarios where any frame beats none.
a3: Focus tracking with lock-on a3

Controls how readily the camera switches to a new subject if something briefly passes in front of your original one, and how quickly it reacts to distance changes.

Quick / Erratic response
The camera refocuses fast on whatever’s newest in frame. Good for genuinely unpredictable subjects that change direction suddenly, but prone to “jumping” to an obstruction.
Steady / Delayed response
The camera stays committed to the original subject longer before switching. Better when something briefly crosses your subject (a fence, another player) that you don’t want to lose focus to.
a4: Focus points used a4

Chooses whether every available focus point is selectable, or only every other one.

Skipping every other point makes manual point selection faster since there are fewer stops to click through — worth it if you rarely need pinpoint placement.
a5: Store points by orientation a5

Remembers a separate focus point (and AF-area mode) for horizontal versus vertical shooting.

Valuable if you regularly swap between orientations mid-shoot — you won’t have to re-position your focus point every time you rotate the camera.
a6: AF activation a6

Chooses whether autofocus triggers from a half-press of the shutter, or only from a dedicated AF-ON button.

Either control focuses. The familiar default most photographers already know.
AF-ON only
This is “back-button focus” — focus and shutter release become fully separate actions. Lets you focus once, then recompose and fire repeatedly without refocusing. A favorite of many advanced shooters, but takes some habit-building.

Worth switching off for candid or event work, where a bright lamp lighting up your subject’s face defeats the purpose of being discreet.

Highlights in-focus edges with a colored outline during manual focus.

Pick a peaking color that contrasts with your typical subject matter — red peaking is hard to see against a red dress, for instance. Higher sensitivity shows more (sometimes too much) highlighted edge detail.

Sets the size of the central area weighted most heavily by center-weighted metering.

Applies a small, persistent exposure bias to any metering mode, independent of normal exposure compensation.

Useful if you’ve noticed your camera consistently runs a little bright or dark for your taste and want that baked in permanently rather than adjusted every shot.

c: Timers/AE Lock

c1: Shutter-release button AE-L c1

Chooses whether a half-press of the shutter also locks exposure.

c2: Self-timer c2

Sets the self-timer’s delay, number of shots, and interval between shots.

c3: Power off delay c3

Sets how long the meter, playback, and menus stay active before the camera powers down.

A longer delay means less digging through wake-up menus between shots, at the cost of faster battery drain.

d: Shooting/Display

d1: CL mode shooting speed d1

Sets the frame rate used in Continuous Low-speed release mode.

d2: Maximum shots per burst d2

Caps how many frames can be captured in a single continuous burst.

Mechanical shutter

Electronic front-curtain
A hybrid that reduces shutter shock at slower speeds while keeping mechanical shutter close for the second curtain. A good general-purpose middle ground.
Electronic (fully silent)
No moving parts at all — completely silent operation. Best for quiet environments like ceremonies or theater, but can show rolling-shutter skew on fast motion or under flickering light.
d7: Extended shutter speeds (M) d7

Unlocks shutter speeds slower than 30 seconds in manual mode, up to many minutes.

Essential for astrophotography or extreme long-exposure work like star trails and light painting, where 30 seconds isn’t nearly enough.
d8: Limit selectable image area d8

Restricts which image area/crop options appear in the quick-selection list.

d9: File number sequence d9

Controls whether file numbering continues across folders/card formats or resets.

Keeping it continuous avoids ever having two different images share the same filename, which can otherwise cause accidental overwrites when importing to a computer.

Handy if you find holding a button and turning a dial simultaneously awkward — release the button, dial in the change, then confirm with a half-press of the shutter.

Reverses which direction turning the lens’s manual focus ring moves the focus point nearer or farther.

Low sensitivity
Focus stays locked on your subject even if something briefly crosses in front — good when you don’t want focus hunting for every distraction.
High sensitivity
Focus reacts and shifts quickly to whatever’s newest or closest — good for genuinely unpredictable, fast-changing scenes.
g7: Hi-Res Zoom speed g7

Sets how quickly the Hi-Res Zoom feature zooms in or out during recording.

g8: Power zoom (PZ) button options g8

Configures power-zoom lens button behavior specifically for video.

g9: Fine ISO control (mode M) g9

Allows finer ISO increments than the standard step value when shooting video in manual exposure mode.

Useful for very subtle, gradual exposure ramps during a shot, where a full 1/3-stop jump in ISO would be visibly noticeable.
g10: Extended shutter speeds (S/M) g10

Unlocks slower shutter speeds for video in shutter-priority and manual modes than are normally available.

Set the threshold near the top of your camera’s dynamic range (commonly around 90-100 IRE) to catch genuinely blown-out highlights before you’re stuck with them in post.

Delete

Deletes selected images, all images in the current folder, or all images taken on a chosen date.

Playback folder

Chooses which folder(s) are shown during playback.

Highlights
Flashes blinking warnings over blown-out highlight areas — the fastest way to catch overexposure while reviewing.
RGB histogram
Shows tonal distribution per color channel, more precise than judging exposure by eye on the small screen.
Focus point
Displays exactly where the camera focused, useful for confirming sharp focus landed where intended.
Delete pictures from both slots

When the same image exists on both cards, chooses whether deleting it removes it from one slot or both.

Dual-format recording PB slot

When a shot was saved as both RAW and JPEG to separate slots, chooses which version is shown by default in playback.

Filtered playback criteria

Sets the criteria (rating, protected status, retouched, etc.) used when playback is switched into filtered mode.

Series playback

Chooses whether bursts of continuous shots are grouped together as a single series or shown as individual frames when scrolling.

Picture review

Chooses whether a photo automatically appears on-screen right after it’s taken.

Turning this off saves battery and keeps you looking through the viewfinder rather than checking every frame — good habit for fast-moving shoots.
After delete

Chooses which image is shown next after you delete one during playback.

After burst, show

Chooses which frame from a continuous burst is displayed first when you review it.

Record camera orientation

Chooses whether the camera records vertical/horizontal orientation data with each shot for auto-rotation later.

Auto-rotate pictures

Chooses whether vertical shots are automatically rotated for correct display during playback.

Copy image(s)

Copies selected pictures from one memory card to the other.

🔧The Setup Menu

Camera-wide housekeeping: formatting cards, display calibration, sensor cleaning, sound, connectivity ports, power behavior, and firmware.

Format memory card

Erases a chosen memory card and prepares its file system for use with this camera.

Always back up any images you need first — this cannot be undone. Formatting in-camera (rather than on a computer) is also the more reliable way to avoid card corruption.
Save user settings

Saves your current combination of settings to a U1/U2/U3-style user mode for instant recall later.

Great for jumping instantly between totally different setups — say, a fast-action sports configuration versus a quiet, deliberate portrait configuration — without manually resetting a dozen settings each time.
Reset user settings

Clears a saved user setting bank back to camera defaults.

Language

Sets the menu display language.

Time zone and date

Sets the camera’s clock, date format, time zone, and daylight saving setting.

Worth double-checking after any travel across time zones — file timestamps get used for a lot of automatic sorting later in Lightroom or similar software.
Monitor brightness

Adjusts rear monitor brightness manually or lets it adjust automatically.

Monitor color balance

Fine-tunes the color cast of the rear monitor.

Viewfinder brightness

Adjusts electronic viewfinder brightness.

Viewfinder color balance

Fine-tunes the color cast of the electronic viewfinder.

Viewfinder display size

Chooses the magnification of the viewfinder display during shooting.

Limit monitor mode selection

Restricts which monitor/viewfinder switching options are available when cycling with the eye sensor or a dedicated control.

Auto rotate info display

Chooses whether the shooting info display rotates automatically when you turn the camera vertically.

AF fine-tuning options

Allows manual, lens-specific autofocus micro-adjustment.

Only worth touching if you have a specific lens consistently front- or back-focusing across many shots — not a setting to tinker with casually.
Non-CPU lens data

Manually enter focal length and maximum aperture for older manual lenses that lack electronic contacts, enabling metering and EXIF support.

Distance units

Chooses meters or feet for on-screen distance readouts.

Save focus position

Chooses whether the lens returns to its last-used manual focus distance when the camera powers back on.

Save zoom position (PZ lenses)

Chooses whether a compatible power-zoom lens returns to its last zoom position on power-up.

Auto temperature cutout

Sets how aggressively the camera shuts down to protect itself from overheating during extended use, particularly video.

Your options

Standard
Shuts down at a conservative temperature threshold. Prioritizes protecting the camera’s internals over maximum recording time.
High
Allows the camera to run hotter before cutting out, extending realistic recording time for long video sessions — at somewhat higher long-term thermal stress on the camera.
Clean image sensor

Runs the sensor’s automatic dust-shake cleaning cycle, on demand or on a schedule.

Image Dust Off ref photo

Captures a reference image used by Nikon software to digitally map and remove dust spots from RAW files.

Pixel mapping

Checks the sensor for pixels that no longer record light correctly and maps around them.

Image comment

Attaches a short custom text comment to every image’s metadata.

Copyright information

Embeds your name and copyright notice into every image’s metadata automatically.

Worth setting up once and leaving on — it travels with every file you shoot from that point forward with zero extra effort.
IPTC

Embeds a preset block of IPTC metadata (contact info, credit line, etc.) into your images, and lets you load presets from a file.

Z Connector Function

Sets whether the multi-purpose port on the camera acts as a headphone jack or a wired remote-control terminal.

Voice memo options

Configures microphone gain and other settings used when recording voice memos attached to still images.

Camera sounds

Turns shutter, focus-confirmation, and touch-screen sounds on or off, and adjusts their volume.

Silent mode

Disables the mechanical shutter sound and camera beeps for fully quiet shooting, typically paired with the electronic shutter.

Great for ceremonies, theater, and wildlife — just be aware some other Silent mode side effects (like reduced flash options and possible rolling-shutter distortion) come along with it.
Touch controls

Turns the touchscreen on/off and adjusts its sensitivity.

Self-portrait mode

Adjusts camera behavior automatically when the monitor is flipped around to face you.

HDMI

Configures output resolution, frame rate, and other options for HDMI-connected displays or recorders.

USB connection priority

Sets what a USB connection prioritizes by default — for example, power delivery versus data transfer.

Conformity marking

Displays regulatory certification marks/logos for the camera.

Battery info

Shows battery charge level, shot count on the current charge, and battery age/health information.

USB power delivery

Turns on/off the ability to power or charge the camera from a USB power source while it’s in use.

Energy saving (photo mode)

Trims live-view refresh and display behavior to extend battery life in stills shooting.

Worth turning on for a long day out shooting away from a charger; the small cost is slightly less smooth live view.
Slot empty release lock

Chooses whether the shutter can fire with no memory card inserted.

Worth leaving locked (shutter disabled with no card) for everyday use — it’s the classic safeguard against the heartbreak of a full shoot with nothing actually saved.
Save/load menu settings

Saves your entire menu configuration to a memory card, or loads a saved configuration back.

If you ever pick up a second Z5 II body, this is the fastest way to make it behave identically to your main one.
Reset all settings

Resets every camera setting, across all menus, back to factory default in one step.

Firmware version

Displays the currently installed firmware version and is where you initiate a firmware update.

Worth checking every few months — Nikon periodically ships genuine autofocus and feature improvements through firmware, not just bug fixes.

Connect to smart device

Pairs the camera with the SnapBridge app on a phone or tablet for transfer and remote control.

Wireless remote (ML-L7) options

Configures pairing and behavior for Nikon’s ML-L7 Bluetooth remote control.

Bluetooth remote cntrl options

General Bluetooth remote-control settings beyond the ML-L7 specifically.

Connect to computer

Configures a wireless connection to a computer for tethering or transfer.

Connect to FTP server
