Youthful Ambition

Introduction

“Every child dances, and then you learn not to.” – Mark Morris

Youthful Ambition is a series about young athletes and performers who have traded casual play for intense dedication. These are international dancers, fighters, gymnasts, and skaters captured in the middle of their craft.

There are no staged or artificial poses here. Christopher gives the kids room to move, letting their actual training, athleticism, and focus dictate the shot. A clear example is the child ballerina in New Orleans, whose balance turned a rough street corner into a stark, natural stage.

This is an ongoing, long-term project that has been shot across four continents and spans many distinct disciplines, documenting the universal drive of the next generation.

Project Statement

Youthful Ambition looks at what happens when serious discipline begins at an early age. By photographing highly skilled young performers in everyday, real-world environments, the series focuses on a level of physical and mental dedication that people rarely associate with childhood.

These kids aren’t playing for the camera; they are executing demanding physical arts that take years to learn. The images strip away the usual sentimentality of childhood to show something much heavier: the grit, the sweat, and the quiet pride that comes with mastering a skill.

From a kid boxer staring down the lens to a gymnast holding a flawless handstand against a weathered wall, these photographs show that real ambition doesn’t wait until adulthood. The series is a tribute to that early focus, showing the resilience and fierce intent of young people who already know exactly who they are.
